Frequently Asked Questions
Are wood-burning stoves being phased out?
No, wood-burning stoves are not being phased out. However, there is new country-wide legislation that will enforce requirements. To help reduce harmful Co2 Emissions, all log burners sold on Fires2U are EcoDesign models.
Your woodburner must also have been manufactured before the 1st of January 2022. If you meet one of these two requirements, you can continue to purchase and use your multifuel stove for years to come.
Will I still be able to use my log burner after 2022?
Yes! Log burners are still legal and available to purchase. However, new 2022 legislation has aimed to improve the ecological nature of wood-burning stoves.
The central points of legislation are as follows:
The UK market will only sell the cleanest log burners, and stoves will be allowed to be on the UK market.
Solid, unclean fuels will be restricted.
You can continue to use a log burner, but it must be an eco-friendly model.
Are wood-burning stoves expensive to run?
With the price of gas and electricity steadily increasing, it’s no wonder the population are looking for alternative, cheaper ways to heat their homes.
Wood-burning stoves are surprisingly inexpensive to run. The Stove Alliance Industry (SIA) has stated that wood-burning stoves cost 13% less than gas-powered central heating for the whole household.
At a third of the price, wood-burning stoves only need around 3.5 cubic metres of wood to heat a house if used during the weekends and evenings from October to April: this works out at a maximum annual cost of £490.
Do you need permission to install a wood-burning stove?
Installing a solid fuel stove in your home is a worthwhile investment. However, you might be wondering if you need permission to install one.
Technically, no. If your wood-burning stove is installed by a specialist approved by the Heating Equipment Testing and Approvals Scheme (HETAS), you do not have to seek permission from your local authority.
HETAS is a UK organisation that monitors and continuously aims to improve the quality of solid fuel stoves in the home. This maintenance ensures that the chimneys and flues of the home remain safe when a log burner is installed.
